About OSCAR

OSCAR is a product of the Texas Workforce Commission/Career Development Resources (TWC/CDR) and was originally developed under a grant from the United States Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.

History

The original OSCAR was designed to be a vehicle to showcase the new O*NET database, with emphasis on providing tools to assist dislocated workers transition to new careers. OSCAR was designed with a friendly look and feel to avoid intimidating any person who was not familiar with computers and menus, toolbars, etc.

The first Windows version of OSCAR, with Texas labor market information, was started in 1997 and released in 1998. This version included the new O*NET Work Importance Locator assessment tool.

The second Windows version of OSCAR was released in early 2001. This version included several new features, including the Department of Education/OVAE's career clusters, a second O*NET assessment (the Interest Profiler), and national labor market information. This new version also featured a new report system which provided greater flexibility in printing and saving reports.

Development of this internet version began in 2001.

During the same period, a second pressing of the second version of OSCAR was released. This edition included a new Texas version, OSCAR 2.1, which added a few new features and again included Texas labor market information.
